New Mexico – SANTA FE, N.M. (KRWG) The state Game Commission plans to consider whether to move ahead with a project to restore native Rio Grande cutthroat trout to Animas Creek in southern New Mexico.
The commission is to take up the issue Thursday at a meeting in Santa Fe.
Rio Grande cutthroat trout populations occupy less than 10 percent of their historic range in New Mexico and southern Colorado.
The commission sets fishing and hunting policies for the Game and Fish Department.
Also on the commission agenda is a proposal to provide as many as three oryx hunting permits for the Wounded Warrior Project to offer hunting opportunities to veterans seriously injured in fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Another proposal would set aside two elk hunting licenses for nonprofit wish-granting organizations.
