New Mexico is moving to set the stage for work to clean up the portion of the Animas River in northwestern New Mexico's San Juan County.
The Daily Times reports that the state Environment Department will provide just under $290,000 for a watershed plan intended to open the door for future funding for specific anti-pollution projects.
According to James Hogan, the department's surface water quality bureau chief, the funding is coming from taxes paid by companies when they extract oil and other resources from state lands/.
The Animas River begins in southwestern Colorado and flows into New Mexico before it joins the San Juan River in Farmington.
