Anne Hubbell, a communication studies professor, has been named interim associate dean in New Mexico State University’s College of Arts and Sciences. Hubbell was selected by Arts and Sciences Dean Christa Slaton to serve the college in place of Ken Van Winkle, who was recently named interim president at NMSU Alamogordo, effective June 1.
“Dr. Hubbell has excelled in every role she has assumed - teacher, researcher and administrator,” said Slaton. “As the 2014 recipient of the College of Arts and Sciences Award for Outstanding Achievement in Outreach, she was recognized for her wonderful talent in collaboration and community engagement. We look forward to her joining our leadership team in the college as an interim associate dean.”
Hubbell will act as interim associate dean for strategic initiatives and assessment in the arts and sciences college. Her responsibilities will also include serving as the director of the Arts and Sciences Student Ambassador Program and adviser to the Student Council, as well as advancing the college’s community engagement activities.
She has served as academic department head in the Department of Communication Studies and interim department head in Journalism and Mass Communication. For the last two years, she chaired the College of Arts and Sciences Planning and Budgeting Committee.
Most recently, Hubbell taught a course in engagement and service learning, which encouraged student participation in raising $3,500 and more than 2,500 pounds of food for Casa de Peregrinos, a local food bank. She also led another group of students to collect more than 600 books for a library for Jardin de los Ninos, a nonprofit organization that provides services to homeless and near homeless children and their families.
Hubbell recently spearheaded the college’s new Discovery Scholars program, which provides research mentors for undergraduates and the Grants for Grants initiative to support faculty in writing proposals to fund research and creative activity.
“I’ve learned a lot in researching the departments and programs for Discovery Scholars,” Hubbell said. “But I am really excited about learning more about the college, and I am looking forward to working with and supporting the departments and programs.”
Hubbell will begin her duties on June 1.
