More than 7,100 luminarias will illuminate the campus of New Mexico State University from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, during the 31st annual “Noche de Luminarias.”
One of the largest luminaria displays in New Mexico, the candle-lit paper bags will begin at the Educational Services Building, follow along the International Mall, surround Corbett Center Student Union, extend down to Barnes and Noble and continue to the University Museum. The event is free and open to the public.
Visitors can enjoy trolley rides provided by Frontier Adventures along the luminaria route, and free refreshments inside Corbett Center. Activities and entertainment will be held at various locations inside Corbett Center, including an indoor ice skating rink.
“Noche de Luminarias” or “Night of Lights” is a university tradition that began in 1984 as the President’s Holiday Reception. It is a way for the university and community to kick off the holiday season with an evening of festivities and entertainment.
Morgan Busch, student program coordinator, said she is very excited for Noche de Luminarias and encourages more NMSU students to experience the holiday tradition.
“It is my second time working with the event, and I am eager to see more college students join us,” Busch said.
“Noche de Luminarias” is sponsored by NMSU Campus Activities, ASNMSU, Aggies Activities Council, Auxiliary Services, Barnes & Noble at NMSU and the University Museum. The Las Cruces High School band will set up the display.
