NMSU’s Loui Reyes Selected As President Of New Mexico Council Of Graduate Deans

Dr. Loui Reyes, NMSU

Loui Reyes, dean of the New Mexico State University Graduate School, was unanimously elected as president-elect of the New Mexico Council of Graduate Deans at a meeting recently.

The council serves as a recommending body for the state’s graduate education endeavors including graduate curriculum review for new graduate programs, graduate program review and any other items regarding statewide graduate education.

“I am excited to serve the Land of Enchantment,” Reyes said. “Two immediate challenges for the NMCGD are strengthening its relationship with the Department of Higher Education and conjuring an inspiring statewide graduate vision that reflects a high standard of performance, appeals to shared values and addresses common problems.”

The council is composed of one member from each constitutionally created university in New Mexico offering graduate degrees and a representative from the New Mexico Higher Education Department (ex-officio, non-voting).

In his new role, Reyes will be responsible for reporting the actions taken by the council to organizations such as NMHED and the Association for Continuing Higher Education and others. He also will serve as the spokesperson for the council in addition to the functions as president.

Since 2011, Reyes has served in leadership roles within the NMSU Graduate School as interim associate dean, associate dean and interim dean before his appointment to dean in spring 2015.

Additionally, he was a faculty member in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the College of Education from 2000-2012.

Reyes is a product of the NMSU Graduate School. He completed post-doctoral work in educational learning technologies in 2003 and earned his Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction in 1997. Reyes also has a master’s degree in teaching: curriculum and instruction and a bachelor’s degree in social work from NMSU.
