SANTA FE – New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver today announced NMVote.org, which is a new online voter information portal where New Mexico voters can request an absentee ballot online for the first time in the state’s history and find other important election information in a single web location. The portal can be found at NMVote.org.
“NMVote.org will make absentee voting more convenient than ever before by allowing voters to request a ballot online,” said Secretary Toulouse Oliver. “I’ll keep looking for ways to improve the voting process in New Mexico and to give registered voters easier access to the ballot and the election information they need.”
In addition to requesting an absentee ballot online, voters can use NMVote.org to register to vote or update their current voter registration, find a voting location, view important election dates, request a military or overseas ballot or look up third-party voter registration agents.
Earlier this month, Secretary Toulouse Oliver adopted an administrative rule on absentee voting to enhance the state’s absentee voting process. The new rule contains guidelines to inform county clerks about how to issue and process the new online absentee ballot applications they will be receiving through the Secretary of State’s voter information portal.
In the 2017 legislative session, Secretary Toulouse Oliver worked with Senator Daniel Ivey-Soto and Representative Tomás Salazar to pass legislation allowing voters to apply online for an absentee ballot. The legislation also established procedures to allow blind and visually impaired voters to cast an absentee ballot independently using their own non-visual or low-vision technology.
County clerks will begin sending absentee ballots to voters who have successfully completed the absentee application process on May 8, 2018, and will continue sending absentee ballots to successful applicants untilJune 1, 2018. In order to be counted, absentee ballots must be mailed or delivered to the county clerk – or in-person to a polling location – by the time polls close on Election Day, June 5, 2018.
