Northern NM Lake Plans To Expand Habitat For Falcon

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plans to expand habitat for American kestrels at Abiquiu Lake in northern New Mexico.

Kestrels are the smallest falcon in North America and sometimes are called sparrow hawks.

The federal agency and the Espanola Wildlife Center are hosting an educational presentation on kestrels Saturday, and it will include a captive bird. Participants also will build nesting boxes and install them around the lake.

The agency said it hopes to increase the kestrel population by providing more habitat and starting a monitoring program.

The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the lake's visitor center on state Highway 96. The lake is about 60 miles northwest of Santa Fe.
