Old-Fashioned Storytelling

June 26, 2015 – Las Cruces, NM - On this edition of PUENTES a la comunidad, bridges to the community, Emily Guerra meets with Storytellers of Las Cruces members: Douglas Jackson, Loni Todoroki and Grits Wrangler to talk to us about one of the oldest forms of communication, storytelling.

For nearly ninety years, and still active, one of the oldest non-profit organizations in this area are “Storytellers of Las Cruces.” They were formerly known as “State College Story League,” founded in 1927 by Jennie George Curry as a community service group. The major focus of Storytellers is still community service, art and entertainment through the tradition of storytelling.

Storytellers are affiliated with the National Story League. Meetings are held at 6 p.m. every third Monday at local members’ homes. They can be found weekly telling stories to young and old at COAS Bookstores in Las Cruces, and also at Senior Centers, Elementary Schools, churches, libraries, service groups and other local organizations. New members are always welcome to participate, contact Douglas Jackson by email at – deejay044@hotmail.com

Grits Wrangler, "Reciter of Poetry,” will be at the historic Rio Grande Theatre at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7th reciting a selection of children’s, classical and cowboy poetry from over 200 poems he has memorized. The Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum will be hosting Storytellers of Las Cruces “Good Old Summertime” indoors storytelling event at 7 p.m., Thursday, July 9th to share tales from summers past. Some of the characters include: Sarah Addison as “Juba,” Henry Ludwig as “Billy the Kid,” Loni Todoroki as “The Lady with the Hats,” Florence Hamilton, Douglas Jackson, Grits Wrangler and Preciliana Sandoval as “La Morena.” For more information visit “Storytellers of Las Cruces” on Facebook.
