One Killed, Four Hurt In Texas Fireworks Explosion

One person has been killed and four others injured when fireworks being prepared for a Fourth of July celebration exploded near a Central Texas high school.

Comanche fire Lt. Marcus Nettleton says it's not immediately clear what triggered the explosion about 9 a.m. Thursday on a baseball field adjacent to Comanche High School. He says most of the pyrotechnics were in a trailer when the incident happened.

Members of the Kiwanis Club were setting up the fireworks for Friday's celebration. Nettleton says one club member died at the scene. Four other members were hospitalized with injuries he described as serious.

The club has organized the fireworks show 100 miles southwest of Fort Worth for the past 24 years.

The state fire marshal's office and federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating.
