New Mexico – Thousands of New Mexicans have signed up as organ donors following the unveiling of a new Web site and online donor registry.
The site and registry were created with a $115,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It's a collaborative effort between the state Motor Vehicle Division, New Mexico Donor Services and New Mexico Lions Eye Bank.
State officials said Monday more than 35,000 New Mexicans registered as organ donors in August, with more than 20,000 of them registering after Gov. Bill Richardson announced the site two weeks ago.
Richardson himself registered as an organ donor.
State Taxation and Revenue Secretary Rick Homans said Richardson has helped raise awareness about the importance of organ donations.
