Stray animals getting picked up in Otero County will be brought to a new county-run shelter.
The Alamogordo Daily News reports officials are set to open the new $26,000 shelter in Alamogordo on Monday.
Otero County Manager Pamela Helter says the county commission is hoping the facility will lead to a decrease in expenses spent on housing animals.
The county previously had been contracting with another shelter.
Helter says the shelter is taking over a former dog kennel space.
She says it would have cost the county more to build a new facility or refurbish any other kind of building.
