Los Alamos, New Mexico – SANTA FE, N.M. (KRWG) A nuclear oversight board is holding public hearings in Santa Fe Thursday on safety issues at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
The Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board -- which reports to Congress -- has two separate hearings scheduled. The first, set to begin at 1 p.m. at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center, will center on earthquake safety at the lab. Lab buildings are built over a number of fault lines. And critics are questioning whether existing buildings and a planned new $6 billion plutonium lab could withstand a major earthquake.
Beginning at 7 p.m., the board will open a hearing on general safety issues at the lab.
