Planning Meeting To "Re-Imagine" The Historic Amador Neighborhood In Las Cruces

The City of Las Cruces will join residents and business leaders June 25 - 29 to create a new neighborhood plan for the Amador neighborhood bounded by Mesilla Street, West Hadley Avenue, Valley Drive and West Amador Avenue. This is the area just west of the Las Cruces Railroad Museum.

It’s an opportunity, says David Weir, City of Las Cruces Community Development Director, to “build off previous planning efforts” to create “a demonstration project.” The idea, he says, is to not only suggest ways to redevelop this former industrial area but to also provide “an example for other areas of the City.”

While the neighborhood’s assets have been underutilized in the recent past, a variety of residences and businesses have located there, with others suggesting they’d consider relocating if the mix of opportunities was right. That makes the area ideal for testing the City’s strategies for encouraging more integrated approaches to redevelopment.

Among those goals:  Better connections between where people live and where they work; an expanded range of housing choices; and more options for walking or biking to most daily needs instead of relying only on cars.

The collaborative planning exercise begins with an opening presentation and community discussion on Thursday, June 25, at 6:30 p.m. at Alma d’arte Charter High School (402 W. Court Avenue). A concluding presentation and community review of the five days of idea testing will take place on Monday, June 29, also at the school.

More information about the project’s background, the complete schedule of meetings and ways to participate is on the website dedicated to the process: www.amadorproximo.org.
