Albuquerque police have arrested a man who was suspected of driving drunk when he killed a bicyclist inside a gated Tanoan community.
Police spokesman Simon Drobik says 25-year-old Coulter Cook was arrested Sunday after refusing a Breathalyzer test.
Witnesses had called 911 to report a truck that had been swerving through the Tanoan Country Club gated community. Drobik says the truck hit a bicyclist and dragged the rider about 150 feet.
The victim was 59-year-old Reed "Bart" Rutledge, a prominent Albuquerque home builder. He was transported to a hospital, where he later died.
Drobik says police saw an open case of beer and empty beer cans in Cook's vehicle.
Cook told television reporters that he hadn't been drunk during the crash.
Cook's results from a forced blood draw are pending.
