Public Invited To Apply For "Use Of Force" Class With Sheriff's Department

The Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department will again offer a unique, one-day class to educate the public on the use of force in police work, and the split-second decisions law enforcement officers are trained to make in potentially deadly situations.

This is the third time DASO has offered this type of training, which was initiated after a few highly-publicized shootings around the nation involving police officers.

The class is free and open to the public. Due to the subject matter, the class is limited to the first 25 people who apply.

“We want the public to have an opportunity to understand how officers are trained, and how the federal judiciary views the use of force by law enforcement,” said Detective Lawrence Louick, who will present the class along with Major Brent Barlow of the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department.

The class also includes a shoot/don’t shoot simulated scenario for participants, along with detailed information on the various classes and curriculum law enforcement officers are required to learn.

“Law Enforcement Use of Force: What the Community Needs to Know” will be hosted at the DASO main headquarters, 845 N. Motel Boulevard, on Saturday, Dec. 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

To apply, email Kelly Jameson at kellyj@donaanacounty.org or send a private message via the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department Facebook page. For security purposes, applicants must provide their date of birth, a valid driver’s license, email address and phone number.
