Public Lands Meetings Next Week In Las Cruces, Alamogordo

The Southwest Environmental Center is letting people know about two meetings next week….Tuesday in Alamogordo and Wednesday in Las Cruces.

The Bureau of Land Management is holding another set of public meetings on its draft Tri-County Resource Management Plan (RMP) for nearly 3 million acres of public land in Doña Ana, Otero, and Sierra Counties.

The meetings will be held from 6 to 7:30….in the evening...Tuesday in Alamogordo at the Willie Estrada Civic Center and Wednesday in Las Cruces at the Dona Ana County Government Center.

The Southwest Environmental Center issued a statement saying…the BLM should do a complete inventory and prioritize protection of lands with wilderness characteristics in the planning area.  It also wants to make Otero Mesa off-limits to all oil and gas development and mining.  That’s a position at odds with the standard public lands access sought by many in the oil and gas industry.

The Southwest Environmental Center is busy with another project right now…its major annual fundraiser….a raffle for a Toyota Prius.

The center is selling raffle tickets at its office in downtown Las Cruces…and on its website…  www.wildmesquite.org

The drawing takes place Sunday at Young Park in Las Cruces.
