A turbulent wildfire in southern New Mexico's Gila National Forest has ballooned to 143 square miles. But officials say it's finally showing signs of slowing down.
Authorities said the blaze's growth tapered off in some areas Wednesday evening as the Silver Fire remained 20 percent contained.
Crews were scheduled Thursday to work on structural fire protection on the west side of the blaze in the Cooney area.
Meanwhile, a nearly 15-square-mile wildfire in the Pecos Wilderness north of Santa Fe continued to expand as officials say they now are worried about nearby campgrounds and houses since the inferno is moving out of remote areas.
The Jaroso Fire remained 0 percent contained.
