Records: Dewhurst Aide Defaulted On Settlement

A top aide to Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst who is under criminal investigation for allegedly stealing campaign funds was accused in court this summer of defaulting on a $475,000 settlement with a land developer.

Court documents obtained Friday accuse Kenneth Barfield of having a history of "failing to disclose all of his bank accounts" to S&K Development Company Inc. The company accused Barfield of moving around the $30,000 a month he was reportedly paid by the David Dewhurst Campaign.

Barfield was Dewhurst's campaign manager and ran his failed bid for the U.S. Senate. New state filings show the campaign with $700,000 less cash on hand than originally reported.

Dewhurst's campaign accuses Barfield of taking money for his "personal benefit."

Neither Barfield nor his attorney immediately returned message seeking comment.
