Reform Effort Begins For Albuquerque Police
Former adversaries from a U.S. Justice Department investigation into Cincinnati police will help Albuquerque draft new reforms for the city's police department.
Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry announced Friday that former ACLU lawyer Scott Greenwood and former Cincinnati Police Chief Tom Streicher will lead a team to negotiate with the Justice Department about reform outlines.
A harsh Justice Department report released Thursday faulted the Albuquerque Police Department for a pattern of excessive force. It called for the police to overhaul its internal affair unit and change policies on deadly force.
Greenwood and Streicher were key figures in helping Cincinnati craft similar reforms in a 2002 agreement. Since then the pair have created a consulting group to help police departments with consent decrees.
Officials say an agreement may cost millions.
