Report: Abbott's Injury Settlement Is $14,400 Each Month

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott has received more than $5 million so far from a settlement over a felled tree in 1984 that left the Republican gubernatorial candidate paralyzed.

Abbott's campaign Friday released a copy of the settlement, which currently pays his family about $14,400 a month. Abbott has been in public office since 1993 but had not disclosed the financial details until now.

Abbott was a 26-year-old law student jogging in Houston when a tree fell on him. He lost use of both legs and now uses a wheelchair.

Spokesman Matt Hirsch said Abbott "wanted to end speculation and provide accurate details of his settlement."

The 55-year-old Abbott is considered the early favorite to replace Gov. Rick Perry in 2014.

The settlement was first obtained by The Texas Tribune.
