Report: Hunting And Fishing Boost New Mexico Economy

The New Mexico Game and Fish Department says the state's hunters and anglers spend more than $613 million on their recreational activities.

The department says they also contribute another $51 million to the state's economy in labor, income and taxes.

The dollar figures are highlighted in a study commissioned by the department to determine the amount of participation and subsequent economic impacts hunters and anglers have on the state and on individual counties.

Gov. Susana Martinez says hunting and fishing are among the state's most cherished traditions. She says the study shows the value of the state's wildlife resources.

The study used license-sale records and survey data to estimate economic contributions based on spending related to recreational hunting and fishing in the state.
