Santa Fe To Recognize Medal Of Honor Recipient

Santa Fe County is planning to rename a bridge and the city of Santa Fe will be unveiling a statue next week in honor of Medal of Honor recipient Army Sgt. 1st Class Leroy Petry.

A Santa Fe native, Petry received the Medal of Honor for throwing back a live grenade that had been tossed at him and fellow soldiers in the Paktya province of Afghanistan in May 2008.

The grenade detonated as he threw it, taking his right hand at the wrist and further injuring him with shrapnel.

The public dedication ceremony for the bridge is planned for Tuesday, one day after the unveiling of the bronze "Hometown Hero" statue outside of City Hall.

Gov. Susana Martinez and other officials are expected to attend the unveiling of the statue on Monday.
