Simmons: An Important Choice In Las Cruces Election

Yvonne Flores

Commentary: Municipal elections are coming up.  Early voting at the City Hall starts on October 18.  November 7 is Election Day.  Some very important decisions will be made by the City Council in the next few months and we need a strong District 6 councilor who will make the right decisions.  Yvonne Flores is that person.

After over eight years of work, the new comprehensive plan will be coming to the Council.  Plan4Las Cruces promotes a sustainable natural and built environment that "makes Las Cruces a great place to live, work, and play for all ages, backgrounds, cultures, and economic levels." Plan4LasCruces will make Las Cruces a city that recognizes the needs of our aging population and that will also make Las Cruces attractive to millennials and the companies they work for.  This plan will help the City become economically competitive so that we can compete with other cities trying to attract companies with good jobs.

The next increase in the minimum wage will also come before the council.  So far, that increase has not had a negative effect.  The City has seen an annual rate of more new businesses than before the increase.  The employment rate has gone up and revenue from Gross Receipt Taxes (GRT) has also increased.

Yvonne Flores is an attorney and an educator.  She has considerable experience working with immigration issues, has taught in both K-12 and community college settings, supports funding for early childhood education, believes in community schools, will advocate for the growth of the city's small businesses, and is a champion for the Organ Peaks Desert Mountains Monument. In addition, Yvonne is a League of Women Voters of the United States delegate to the United Nations Framework Conference on Climate Control; Bonn, Germany, November 2017.

Yvonne Flores is my choice for District 6 councilor.
