KRWG

Stand with our Students at New Mexico State University put on a “teach in” to push dialogue and support immigrant students at NMSU.

NMSU Dean of students Michael Jasek said since the Trump administration came into office and signed executive actions on immigration- the mood on campus has shifted.

“We are seeing an impact on our students from a stress level anxiety level concerns for their family members and trying to understand what this means, so my understanding and belief is.”

Jasek said foreign and immigrant students have concerns they could be targeted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement or deported while on campus. He said many are scared to come to school.

Jasek hosted a ‘teach in’ – to show support for students and get key stakeholders to discuss the issues- New Mexico State University Police Chef Stephen Lopez was there to reaffirm the departments relationship with ICE and the information they share.

“Immigration status we don’t ask – that is not that gets recorded with ask their nationality and that is it.” Lopez said.

Most of the “teach in; attendees were there so show support, rather than the impacted students themselves. Jasek said they are working on initiatives to bring those students out and the shadows and give the support they need.
