State Senator Wants Boxing Match Reinstated At Sun Bowl

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A state senator wants University of Texas System regents to overturn a decision banning a high-profile boxing match from the Sun Bowl in El Paso.

The regents are scheduled to meet next Wednesday and Thursday in Austin. Sen. Jose Rodriguez, an El Paso Democrat, says he'll ask them to put Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa's decision on the agenda.

Cigarroa told University of Texas-El Paso officials this week their stadium cannot host the June 16 fight between Mexico's Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Ireland's Andy Lee.

The university system cited an elevated security risk at the match but has provided no details to city officials. Local, state and federal law enforcement agencies say they are unaware of any security risk associated with the fight.
