Status Of New Sunland Park Mayor Challenged

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — The status of newly appointed Sunland Park Mayor Javier Perea has been called into question because of a possible violation of the state's open meetings act.

Perea was appointed by the city council last Wednesday during a meeting at the senior center.

But police reportedly blocked some people from entering the meeting because the building's occupancy had been reached.

The Las Cruces Sun-News (http://bit.ly/I7VYxW) says city officials didn't set up a sound system outside for people wanting to listen to the meeting.

The state open meetings act specifies that "all persons desiring shall be permitted to attend and listen to the deliberations and proceedings" in a public meeting.

A spokesman for New Mexico Attorney General Gary King says his office only launches an investigation if it receives a formal complaint.
