Susan Riedel, Republican Candidate For New Mexico Attorney General

New Mexico is my home. I raised my three boys here and believe it’s a wonderful and unique place to live. I’m running to be your next Attorney General because, after 25 years as a prosecutor, I believe it is time that we elect a prosecutor, not a politician to be New Mexico’s “Top Cop”.

As a career prosecutor and District Judge with over 25 years of experience, I’ve seen both the worst and the best our state has to offer.  I’ve tried some of the most disgusting, unconscionable crimes you could ever imagine, but I have also seen the hope and resilience of families and communities as they have dealt with and comforted each other after these terrible acts.

As great as New Mexico is, we also have some big problems. Rampant political corruption has left us with a system that benefits a small, powerful few over the needs of the many. We have scared businesses and good paying jobs out of New Mexico because of overregulation. And we have one of the highest rates of rape, domestic violence and child abuse in the country.  A woman is nearly twice as likely to be raped in New Mexico as in the rest of the country.

I say this not to disparage our state but as a challenge. New Mexico is an amazing place to live, but somewhere along the way we lost our way. To fix New Mexico, we need to take on the crime that is ruining this state; we need to make it a safer place for our women and children; and we need to finally put an end to the corruption.

I’ll be the first to admit, I’m not a politician and I never planned on running for public office. But I think that is why I’m the best candidate for the job. It’s the career politicians that got us into this mess and we can’t count on them to get us out of it. It was politicians that either took part in the political corruption, or turned a blind eye to it. It was the politicians that ignored the disturbing levels of violent crime in our state and did nothing to protect the victims and prevent future crimes. It was the politicians that made it so difficult for to operate a business here that business owners small and large took their jobs and moved to Arizona and Texas.

I’m thankful for the encouragement and endorsement of my friend, Governor Susana Martinez. She has and will continue to do a tremendous job to clean up the corruption and make New Mexico an even better place to live… But she can’t do it alone.

As a prosecutor, I never shied away from a tough case and I was never afraid to look a criminal in the eye and make sure they got what they deserved.  You can count on me doing the same thing as your Attorney General.  I won’t be afraid to arrest a corrupt official, no matter how powerful they are, and I will tirelessly fight to protect our families and our communities.

Career politicians like my opponent caused this mess, and we can’t trust them to solve it.

It’s time to elect a prosecutor, not a politician as our next Attorney General.
