Suspect in Las Cruces Hit-and-Run Arrested

Andrew R. Aguilar, the driver suspected of Saturday’s hit-and-run crash that injured a 29-year-old man, was arrested Wednesday evening.

Aguilar, 25, was arrested before 9 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20, near the 200 block of Three Crosses Avenue. He is charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, a third-degree felony count, and is incarcerated at the Dona Ana County Detention Center with a cash-only bond set at $50,000.

Aguilar also had three bench warrants for his arrest.

The 29-year-old victim of Saturday’s hit-and-run crash remains hospitalized at University Medical Center of El Paso.

Las Cruces Police learned that Aguilar was driving his girlfriend’s green Dodge Durango shortly after4:30 p.m. Saturday, April 16, with the 34-year-old woman as a passenger, when they spotted her ex-boyfriend near the 1300 block of north Solano Drive.

Witnesses told police the 29-year-old man drove into the parking lot of a nearby car wash and got out of the vehicle while carrying a baseball bat. Detectives learned that Aguilar stopped the Durango in the roadway as the two men stared at each other. Witnesses said Aguilar revved the Durango’s engine and sped forward, over a curb and into the parking lot, striking the man.

The Durango fled the area but was followed by a witness who called 911. Aguilar pulled over at 1900 N. Solano Dr. and ran from the vehicle before police arrived. The 34-year-old owner of the Durango stayed behind and was questioned by police. No charges have been filed against her.
