Suspects Shoot At Man After He Interrupts Burglary

Two men have been arrested after Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office investigators say the men allegedly burglarized a home and then chased and shot at the victim.

According to deputies, 24-year-old Joseph Anthony Lucero and 31-year-old MarcelinoVenegas were inside a home in the 200 block of Polvadera in Rincon when the man who lived at the residence arrived shortly after midnight Monday, June 10. The victim told investigators he quickly left the property after he saw the men in his house through a window in the front door.

The victim said Venegas and Lucero then got into their truck and began to chase the victim northbound on N.M. 185, reportedly trying to force the victim off the road. The victim called police, and later reported hearing a gun shot fired at him from the suspects’ vehicle.

The shot damaged the tailgate of the victim’s truck, but did not injure the victim.

An officer with the Hatch Police Department responded and was able to stop the suspects’ vehicle at mile marker 34. The passenger, who allegedly fired the shot at the victim, was identified as Lucero.

Venegas was reportedly driving the vehicle, which contained several electronics that the victim identified as stolen from his home. The shotgun allegedly used by Lucero was also taken from the victim’s home.

Lucero was arrested and transported to the Doña Ana County Detention Center where he’s being held on charges of aggravated burglary, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, shooting at or from a motor vehicle, larceny, conspiracy to commit larceny and possession of a firearm by a felon. His bond was set at $25,000 secured.
