Teachers Fight Texas School Cuts

Texas – Teachers are rallying at the Capitol as a bill to slash $4 billion for Texas public schools inched closer to passage during the special legislative session.

Democratic state Sen. Wendy Davis on Saturday joined about 100 protestors. Opponents mostly concede the Republican-controlled legislature will approve the education funding shortfall but say they're focused on punishing lawmakers who supported the measure in the 2012 elections.

Davis, whose filibuster killed the school finance bill during the regular session, told teachers to keep fighting.

The House appropriations committee Saturday approved the new school finance plan as part of a larger budget bill. The full House is expected to vote on the bill this week.

The Senate has already passed the measure, which is necessary to balance the state budget.
