Teen Arrested After Striking Las Cruces Officer With Car

By KRWG News

Las Cruces – Las Cruces Police arrested a 17-year-old boy early Saturday morning after he struck an officer with a vehicle while attempting to flee from the scene of a loud disturbance.

Ruben A. Bustillos, 17, was charged with one count each of aggravated battery upon a peace officer, and driving under the influence of liquor or drugs. Bustillos was given a juvenile Class III referral and was transported to the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he is being held without bond.

Shortly after 1 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 7, Las Cruces Police were called to the 300 block of Soledad Avenue where there was a report of a loud party and possible gunshots fired. An LCPD officer arrived on scene and saw a teen, later identified as Bustillos, limping down Soledad Avenue toward a vehicle. The officer gave the teen several verbal commands to stop but Bustillos refused to obey the orders.

Bustillos then got into a maroon 4-door car and, continuing to disobey the officer's orders, placed the vehicle in drive and accelerated toward the officer. The officer attempted to get out the way of the vehicle but was struck as the car fled the scene.

The officer was not seriously injured.

Bustillos and his passenger were apprehended by other officers a short distance from the scene. The teen later told officers that he had consumed about nine beers at the party.

Officers learned that the sounds of gunshots were actually windows that were broken at the home where a fight ended a large party. Three other teens were detained for a short while and their parents were called to pick them up.
