A Texas Spaceport?

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) — Cameron County is being considered by Space Exploration Technologies Corp. for a commercial space port.

The Brownsville Herald (http://bit.ly/HxfAZF ) reports city and county officials have quietly been working with the Hawthorne, Calif.-based company better known as SpaceX for more than a year. The project appeared Monday on the Federal Register website in which the Federal Aviation Administration is seeking an environmental review. SpaceX is seeking launch licenses from the FAA.

SpaceX spokeswoman Kirstin Granthan says that while the Brownsville area is among potential locations, "there is a long way to go before this could happen."

SpaceX has a launch pad at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida and is developing a launch site at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. They operate a rocket development facility in McGregor, Texas.
