The New Mexico State University campus is about to “think pink” as part of the annual NMSU Aggies are Tough Enough to Wear Pink campaign, scheduled Sept. 28 to Oct. 4. Now in its eighth year, the events surrounding the week promote cancer awareness and raise money to fund cancer research in New Mexico.
“We always hope to achieve three things: to raise money for research, to raise awareness and education and to remember people who have been affected by breast cancer, but at the same time celebrate the survivors,” TETWP campus coordinator Julie Weber said.
The week will begin at 6:45 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, with a Luminaria Remembrance Ceremony and Kick-Off on the Barnes and Noble at NMSU Bookstore patio. From 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29, Taos Dining Center will host a student dinner and silent auction. The Donor Gala and Silent Auction will take place at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, at the Double Eagle de Mesilla.
The Shop for the Cure event will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at the Pan American Center east concourse. There is no charge for shopping, but luncheon tickets cost $45 per person non-reserved, or $500 for a reserved table.
The Barnes and Noble at NMSU Bookstore will host a Relay Race event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3. Those interested in signing up may contact Jamie McClure at aggieapparel@nmsu.edu.
The week will conclude with Saturday’s events, which include a Cervantes Family 5K/10K Fun Run and Walk beginning 8 a.m. at the Aggie Memorial Stadium north entrance. In the evening, the Aggies will take on Georgia Southern, beginning 6 p.m.
“Student response to TETWP has always been really positive,” Weber said. “It’s hard to find anyone who hasn’t been affected by breast cancer in some way, and students have participated in activities, raised money, volunteered their time and supported Pink just by wearing pink shirts.”
All funds raised during the week’s activities remain in New Mexico, funding cancer research at NMSU and UNM Cancer Center through Cowboys for Cancer Research.
