ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Fort Sill Apache Tribal Chairman Jeff Haozous says he is seeking a meeting with New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez in hopes of winning her support for the tribe's proposed casino near Deming.
Martinez said Tuesday that she remains opposed to the effort because the tribe had said it would not attempt to build a casino in Akela when the land was put into trust.
She told the Deming Headlight (http://bit.ly/I1qZDf) that federal officials also are concerned there's no gaming compact.
Haozous he wrote the governor a letter today seeking a meeting. He said he hopes to change her mind by showing her the widespread support the tribe is gaining in southern New Mexico for the project, which he says could create some 300 jobs.
