Udall Pushes For Homeland Security Funding, Immigration Reform

Senator Tom Udall (D-NM)

Congress must approve a budget for the Department of Homeland Security by the end of the month to avoid funding problems.  And New Mexico U.S. Senator Tom Udall says he is concerned about several issues related to the budget.

Udall urged Congress to pass a clean appropriations bill for the Department of Homeland Security in a recent Senate floor speech. Udall voiced concern about the impact a DHS shutdown could have on New Mexico’s security, job market, and economy should a bill not pass by February 27.

Udall also stressed the importance of comprehensive immigration reform in New Mexico and the need for a new system that will secure U.S. borders, strengthen families, and support the economy. Udall then emphasized the importance of a bipartisan effort in creating a bill that protects undocumented immigrants living in New Mexico.

Udall concluded his speech by sharing the stories of two young people brought to the U.S. illegally as children…and their dedicated efforts to attend college and help others. He claims the passage of a new bill is necessary not only for undocumented immigrants like them, but also the men and women of the U.S. Border Patrol.
