The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center has been chosen to participate in a nationwide diabetes study.
The work will be supported by a $2.8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health over the next seven years. The Health Sciences Center will be recruiting 150 New Mexicans who have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes within the last five years.
The study will be comparing drug effects on glucose levels, adverse effects, diabetes complications and patient quality of life over an average of five years.
UNM School of Medicine endocrinology chief Dr. David Schade says diabetes is a top health issue in the U.S., and his team will be looking for answers right here in New Mexico.
Duke, Baylor and Columbia universities are also participating in the study.
