The University of New Mexico has given men's basketball coach Craig Neal a new six-year contract worth $5.7 million.

The school announced the new deal Monday that will keep Neal as Lobos coach through 2020.

In his first year at New Mexico last season, Neal led the Lobos to a 27-7 record and an appearance in the 2014 NCAA Tournament.

Neal's 27 wins is tied for the 12th-most in NCAA history for first-year head coaches.

He became the first New Mexico coach to bring the Lobos to the NCAA tournament in his initial season.

Athletic director Paul Krebs says Craig has done an exemplary job of coaching in his short time.

Neal was introduced as New Mexico's coach in April 2013 after spending six seasons as associate head coach.
