The University of New Mexico's chief lobbyist has resigned following his third arrest for allegedly driving while intoxicated.
The university says Marc Saavedra resigned as director of government and community affairs effective Aug. 8 after a top university official advised him that it would be best if he did so.
Saavedra has been on administrative leave since his July 23 arrest. He had two DWI convictions.
The university said Saavedra had previously signed an agreement after his second conviction that he could be fired if another incident occurred. That conviction stemmed from a 2006 arrest.
The Albuquerque Journal reports that the 42-year-old Saavedra said Monday that the latest arrest could be a "good thing in general."
The Journal said Saavedra made the comment when asked whether he has a drinking problem.
