UPDATE: Big Snowstorm Hits Parts Of New Mexico

A winter storm produced blizzard conditions in eastern New Mexico on Monday, with the greatest impact reported along Interstate 40.

A stretch of eastbound I-40 between Moriarty and near the Texas line is closed due to icy conditions. That stretch of I-40 is open to westbound traffic.

Meanwhile, drifts of 2½ to 5 feet are reported on other highways in Quay County around Tucumcari.

The National Weather Service says there are snowfall reports of 8-10 inches between Tucumcari on the north and Clovis and Portales on the south.

The storm is moving eastward into the Texas Panhandle, but forecasters say it'll remain bitterly cold with winds up to 50 mph.

Schools in Clovis and Portales are closed. Schools in Santa Fe and part of the Albuquerque district opened late.
