UPDATE: FBI Confirms Gunman Shot Doctor At El Paso VA Clinic

The FBI has confirmed that a doctor was fatally shot at a West Texas veterans' clinic in an attack that also left the suspected gunman dead.  Special Agent Mike Martinez on Wednesday declined to identify the doctor or the gunman. The FBI is in the process of questioning hundreds of patients, staffers and others at the El Paso Veterans Affairs Health Care System clinic at Fort Bliss who may have witnessed the shooting Tuesday afternoon.

Martinez says the FBI is taking the lead in the investigation because the shooting occurred on federal property.

Investigators haven't said whether the gunman killed himself or was killed by someone else. They also have not indicated a motive for the shooting.

Martinez says the FBI will release more information at a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

The FBI says it will question hundreds of patients at a Texas veterans hospital who may have witnessed a shooting that left two people, including the suspected gunman, dead.  FBI El Paso Special Agent in Charge Douglas Lindquist says his agents will work their way through the clinic patients in search of clues to what led to the deadly shooting Tuesday afternoon at the El Paso Veterans Affairs Health Care System. The clinic is adjacent to the William Beaumont Army Medical Center near Fort Bliss.

Neither Lindquist nor Army or VA officials would say who either of the dead are, who shot them or what the possible motive for the shooting might be.  Numerous reports indicate the gunman's victim was a doctor at the clinic.

The VA says its clinic will be closed Wednesday to facilitate the investigation.
