U.S. Sharply Cutting Deportations

While debate continues on slowing deportations, the Obama administration already is on pace to deport the fewest number of immigrants since at least 2007. That's according to federal figures obtained by The Associated Press.

Meanwhile, President Barack Obama has postponed until after Election Day his plan for executive actions that could shield millions more immigrants from deportation.

The U.S. deported 258,608 immigrants between the start of the budget year last October and July 28 this summer, according to the figures. During the same period a year earlier, it removed 320,167 people — so that's a decrease of nearly 20 percent. This year's total is down 25 percent from the same period ending in July 2012.
