Vandalism May Prompt Closure Of Facilities In Chaparral

Doña Ana County officials may close several facilities in Chaparral due to what is described as "persistent vandalism and theft."

The county Facilities and Parks Department is preparing a recommendation to close the Delores Wright Community Center Park and the Colquitt Community Center.

County officials say thefts regularly steal air-conditioning and irrigation components from the facilities and have been causing more than $1,000 in damage weekly.

Recent damage included broken windows and graffiti.

County Manager Julia T. Brown will decide whether to close the facilities.

Brown says the Sheriff's Department has stepped up patrols and investigated each incident but that there's little evidence to work with. She says it would help if residents help authorities identify those responsible.
