Votes For Women

Women's Equality Day - August 26th
Women's Equality Day Entertainment

Las Cruces, NM - On this edition of PUENTES, bridges to the community, host Emily Guerra meets with ViAnn Beadle, member of the group “Indivisible Las Cruces,” and with Cassandra Calway, “Las Cruces Coalition for Reproductive Justice” Board member.

In 1920, the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution granted women the right to vote. Later, in 1971, Congress officially declared Women’s Equality Day to be August 26th. Nationwide, Women’s Equality Day will be celebrated this Saturday, August 26th, and also in Las Cruces for the first time. Beadle says this is a good follow-up to the Women’s March in January.

Women’s Equality Day celebration will be held on the Plaza de Las Cruces, Saturday, August 26th from 6pm to 10pm with special guest Speakers – Maggie Toulouse-Oliver, New Mexico Secretary of State; Dr. Bobbie Green, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People; and other speakers to address the history of all women and their voter rights. There will be entertainment for the entire family with food trucks, vendors, and more. Many organizations that serve women and families in our community will also have information tables.
