Woman Sentenced To Prison In Alamogordo Killing

The last of three people convicted in the 2011 killing of a woman outside a Burger King in Alamogordo has been sentenced to life in prison and an additional 26 years.

The Alamogordo Daily News reports that District Judge James W. Counts sentenced Alexias Torres on Tuesday on convictions of first-degree murder and other crimes stemming from the killing of 33-year-old Shavon Twitty.

Fellow defendant Jonathan Montoya confessed to firing the fatal shots, although he said he had only intended to fire a warning shot. He was sentenced to life in prison.

A third person, Melissa Mathis, pleaded guilty last year to second-degree murder and is serving a 16-year sentence.

Prosecutors said Mathis and Twitty were involved romantically and had broken up shortly before Twitty's death.
