Young Immigrants To Line Up For Driver's Licenses

U.S. Department of Homeland Security

Many young immigrants who are protected from deportation under new Obama administration policies are expected to begin pursuing Arizona driver's licenses.

The Arizona Department of Transportation says it is anticipating a rush of immigrant applicants Monday and in the weeks ahead at Motor Vehicle Division offices statewide.

A preliminary injunction issued Dec. 18 by U.S. District Judge David Campbell bars the state from enforcing Gov. Jan Brewer's policy of denying the licenses to about 20,000 immigrants.

Brewer's move marked the nation's most visible challenge to the Obama policy.

The governor is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to review her appeal of the 9th Circuit decision.

Meanwhile, ADOT officials say they will start processing driver's license and identification card applications from qualified immigrants.
