Federal Money To Buy Health Insurance

Texas – A state official says a five-year, $50 million federal grant will assist employees of small businesses in purchasing health insurance.

The new executive commissioner of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, Tom Suehs, said in a statement Monday that the project will stretch "limited taxpayer dollars to insure more Texans."

The state will contribute 20 percent in matching funds.

Texas Farmers May Seek Drought Help

Texas – Texas farmers and ranchers with livestock grazing losses due to drought or fire can seek federal help.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture says producers may begin applying for benefits under the Livestock Forage Disaster Program.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack on Monday announced that applications would be accepted related to qualifying losses since 2008. The money comes from the Agricultural Disaster Relief Trust Fund.

NM Has Unclaimed Property At Fair

New Mexico – Lost anything lately? The state Taxation and Revenue Department wants New Mexicans to recover $121 million in unclaimed property at a booth at the state fair.

Taxation and Revenue Secretary Rick Homans says the rightful heirs to the unclaimed property may not even realize it.

Homans says people can spend five minutes at the department's unclaimed property booth to determine if any property is theirs.

The department is holding cash, jewelry and other items that belong to 870,000 owners.

Perry Gets Help From Giuliani

Texas – Gov. Rick Perry is again enlisting the help of former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani for his re-election campaign.

Perry and Giuliani on Tuesday are scheduled to appear in San Antonio and Austin to discuss gangs and border security efforts. But they will also make fundraising stops for Perry in the two cities, with other fundraisers planned in Houston and Dallas.

NM Adds 13 Weeks of Unemployment Benefits

New Mexico – Gov. Bill Richardson says New Mexico will provide 13 additional weeks of unemployment benefits to people who have lost their jobs.

Richardson says the state's unemployment rate qualifies it to extend the the payments under the federal Extended Unemployment Compensation and Extended Benefits programs.

The Department of Workforce Solutions reports New Mexico's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 7 percent in July.

A&M Faculty Senate Tackles Discrimination

Texas – Some Texas A&M University faculty senate members want sexual orientation and gender identity to be added to the anti-discrimination policy for the entire A&M system.

The senate on Monday discussed the idea of asking regents to OK the nonbinding resolution, but no possible action will be taken until October, the Bryan-College Station Eagle reported Tuesday.

Border Patrol Seizes More Than $1 Million

El Paso – Press Release: U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers conducting southbound operations in cooperation with the Border Enforcement Security Task Force (BEST) at the El Paso port of entry Friday night stopped a 33-year-old man from leaving the country with $802,720. The large money bust was one of three southbound currency seizure CBP officers made in two days at the El Paso port of entry.
